Human Rights
Overview
Human Rights cover a broad and international area of law. There have been several human rights agreements in recent history, the most famous being the Geneva Convention on Human Rights signed after the Second World War.
Since then, Human Rights laws have been extended further and further. They are now increasingly efficient at protecting the rights of people everywhere. Furthermore, human rights laws have given us a criteria through which to judge human rights abuses.
In the UK, the main piece of legislation that addresses human rights is the 1998 Human Rights Act. The Act ensures:
-
You can take a case to the European Convention of Human Rights
- The compliance of police, schools and other public bodies with human rights laws
- All new human rights laws are as compliant as possible with the European Convention of Human Rights (although Parliament could still pass laws contrary to the ECHR)
